Marnie YoungHead CoachMarnie started diving at the age of 19 after her JR college dropped the gymnastics program. She competed at Mt. Sac for 2 years while earning her AA degree and was the south coast conference diving champion. While at Mt. Sac she trained at Industry Hills with coach Rick Earley. She transferred to CSU Long Beach and competed another 2 years in the PAC 10 with coach Debbie McCormick. While in College she competed with the McCormick Divers and dived there for 10 years. Marnie coached High School Divers for Ocean View, Westminster, and Sonora High Schools while. She had CIF Champions and most went on to College diving careers. After college Marnie went professional and dived from 1986-1994 with the Great American High Diving Team where she performed in diving shows all over the world. In 1988 Marnie was the Mixed pairs Cliff Diving Champion off of Waimea Falls in Hawaii. In 1994 She competed at the World Professional High Diving Championships and place 6th doing 2 different dives from 60, 70, and 80 feet. Marnie has competed with US Masters Diving from 1988-Present where she has won several Nationals Championships on both 3-meter and Platform in her age group. Marnie has dived with Dive San Diego for the past 8 years and has helped coach the lessons, novice, high school and age group divers. Marnie has taught the lessons diving program at Carlsbad since 1993 and has been involved in promoting diving around San Diego. Marnie continues to perform in shows for local clubs and at the US Diving Nationals to promote diving and as fund raisers. In addition to her diving career Marnie holds a Masters degree and 2 teaching credentials from CSU Long Beach in Physical Education, and Adapted Physical Education. She has taught as an Adapted Physical Education Specialist for the past 18 years, was the 1998 National APE teacher of the year, and Chair of the CAHPERD, State Council on Adapted Physical Education in 2002. Marnie currently teaches in Oceanside Unified School District, and is an Instructor at SDSU in the Exercise and Nutritional Science Department teaching courses in APE. |
